The museum is located in the centre of Coventry. It boasts the largest collection of British Road transport in the world. We were asked to look at a site adjacent to its existing 1980s building in order to create spaces for additional exhibits, learning, conferences as well as archives and retail uses.  This site is partly occupied by a disused Grade I listed grammar school that, in fact, lends itself well for its future role to house the museum’s archive and shop. The ancillary new-build accommodation at the back will instead be primarily let out for classes and events. We have designed the new addition so that it complements the existing buildings and have ensured it provides links between various components of the site. Overall, our design strategy is very much about supporting easy circulation and orientation throughout the museum campus.
